De Blasio Criticizes Trump’s Puerto Rico Response

Mayor Bill de Blasio is criticizing President Donald Trump, saying he’s showing a lack of interest in the needs of Puerto Rico.

“I really don’t understand what President Trump’s problem is with the people of Puerto Rico,” de Blasio said.

Trump on Thursday tweeted that FEMA, the military and first responders couldn’t remain in Puerto Rico forever to help with the recovery of Hurricane Maria.  It led critics to charge that the president is ready to abandon the people of the island.

“He keeps denigrating the people of Puerto Rico, showing a lack of interest in their needs, treating them as different than other Americans.  That’s what’s happening here,” de Blasio said.

The mayor said if a U.S. state was going through a similar situation, the federal government would provide all the necessary help.  He said there shouldn’t be a different standard for Puerto Rico.
