Islanders Headed Back to Long Island

The New York Islanders are ditching Brooklyn and returning to Long Island.

Bloomberg reports that the Islanders will build a new 18,000-seat arena near Belmont Park.  The proposal was selected over a plan by New York City FC to build a soccer stadium at the site.  An official announcement is expected Wednesday.

In addition to an arena, the plan put forward by the Islanders includes 435,000 square feet of retail space and a hotel.

The Islanders left the Nassau Coliseum and have played games at the Barclays center in Brooklyn since the 2015-16 season.  However, the team has recently been looking to get out of Brooklyn recently because they have the worst attendance in the NHL.
