Vargas Struggles Again, Mets Fall To Reds 7-2

  • Before the game it was announced that Matt Harvey had been traded for Devin Mesoraco.
  • Jason Vargas’ struggles continued early. Before there was even one out, the Mets trailed 2-0 after a Eugenio Suarez 2 run single.
  • Vargas got into trouble in the second but wiggled his way out to keep pressing on.
  • Eugenio Suarez struck again with an RBI double in the third and Tucker Barnhardt knocked in another run and it was 4-0 Cincy after just 3.
  • Vargas only went 4 innings giving up 4 runs and 6 hits. Not as bad as his first few starts but not what the Mets need.
  • Cincy Starter Louis Castillo blanked the Mets into the 6th, when Wilmer Flores stroked a solo home run. Mets got two on with two out and Castillo’s evening was done. Relief pitcher Amir Garrett came in and walked Bruce to load the bases.
  • Adrian Gonzalez, who has been tearing up Cincy, worked the count full, and then walked to force in a run, 4-2 Cincy.
  • Brandon Nimmo struck out with the bases loaded and the rally ended, but the Mets had cut it to a two-run game.
  • Mets Bullpen couldn’t keep it together, Hansel Robles came in bottom of the 7th with an inherited runner and gave up and RBI single to Suarez, his 4th RBI of the night, and a two-run home run to Scooter Gennett, and all of a sudden it was 7-2 Reds.
  • Robles would leave with an injury, and the Mets had to spend another bullpen arm for an already overtaxed pen.
  • Paul Sewald got the final out of the 7th on one pitch, and the Mets night looked bleak.
  • Mets had a great opportunity in the 8th, but Adrian Gonzalez hit into a double play with one out and two on and the Mets last best chance ended.
  • Final score 7-2 Cincinnati
