The City Council has taken up legislation that would legalize electric bikes and scooters in New York City, but Mayor Bill de Blasio is skeptical.
“Obviously we want people to have as many ways as possible to get around, but I think right now it’s – what will keep people safe and where do the decisions ultimately have to be made?” Mayor de Blasio said.
De Blasio said the e-bikes can go fast and they’re abused, with people going the wrong way on streets and driving recklessly.
If I can see something that will create safety in this city and allow people to use e-bikes or e-scooters, I’m very open to that. Now, I haven’t seen that yet. So, right now, I’m staying exactly where I am on the e-bikes. They’re not legal in New York City and there have been real safety problems,” de Blasio said.
