MTA Debuts OMNY Payment System

It’s the beginning of the end for the Metro Card.

The MTA on Friday rolls out a new payment system known as OMNY, allowing people to pay with their smartphone. It’s been installed at 16 subway stations on the 4, 5 and 6 lines between Grand Central and the Barclays Center as well as on Staten Island buses.

People will also be able to pay using a contactless credit, debit and prepaid card. OMNY will be available at all subway stations and on all buses by the Fall of 2020.

The Metro Card will be phased out over the next four years, with plans for it to be completely eliminated by 2023.
