Long Island Teacher Reassigned After Insensitive Assignment On Slavery

An eighth-grade teacher at Dodd Middle School in Freeport, New York, has been placed on administrative leave after she gave an assignment instructing students to write funny captions about slavery.

The unidentified teacher gave out work sheets that showed photographs of Reconstruction-era photos with directions to give them titles and captions that "don't bore me."

The superintendent of Freeport Schools, Dr. Kishore Kuncham called the lesson "poorly conceived...an insensitive trivialization" that is unacceptable.

According to an NBC New York report the teacher released a statement that read, "I apologize for my insensitive words and actions. It is my responsibility to exercise the highest degree of care and thought… I failed to do so."

Parents in the school district said the apology is not enough and they want the teacher fired so she won't be able to do something like this again. The school district did not elaborate on the teacher's future.
