There’s a major shakeup at the NYPD.
Police Commissioner James O’Neill is retiring at the end of the month with Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea taking over.
O’Neill has led a reduction in crime, but also drew criticism from the police unions for the decision to fire Officer Daniel Pantaleo. O’Neill has been commissioner for more than three years and is leaving to take a job in the private sector.
Shea became a patrolman in 1991 and has risen through the ranks of the department to now become commissioner.
Mayor de Blasio called Shea the “real deal” and said he’s ready for the challenge.
