NJ Lifeguard Rescues Driver From Sinking SUV

A good Samaritan in New Jersey saw an SUV sinking in Newark Bay with the driver trapped inside and he jumped into action to help. Lifeguard and swim instructor Anthony Capuano heard the commotion and saw a crowd forming, so he rushed to put his skills to good use.

His prosthetic leg from a previous accident didn’t slow him down as he jumped into the water to get to the vehicle. The driver was shouting “I can’t swim,” so Capuano assured him he was a lifeguard and could save him. He managed to get him out safely and back to dry land, where he’s recovering and is expected to be okay.

Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis gave this hero a shout out after the rescue. “Anthony’s instincts and professionalism just took over,” he explains. “He jumped in, didn’t think about his own safety.”
