More than a dozen people suffered injuries and five were sent to the hospital after a roller coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, malfunctioned during a ride, representatives for the amusement part said.
In what was described as a minor accident, the El Toro rollercoaster malfunctioned around 7:30 p.m. Thursday towards the end of a ride causing injuries to some passengers aboard.
Several park guests reported back pain and five others were taken to a nearby hospital with minor neck, back, mouth and tongue injuries. In total, 14 people were treated onsite for injuries connected to the ride.
The coaster was shut down after the incident, which occurred shortly before the park's 8 p.m. closing time.
El Toro will remain shut down pending an investigation by New Jersey's Department of Consumer Affairs. Investigators were set to be on-site Friday.
According to Six Flags, El Toro is among the tallest and fastest wooden roller coasters in the world. The ride's steepest drop is as many as 19 stories. It reaches speeds of up to 70 miles per hour.
