With more than a year to go before the official Democratic and Republican nominees for president square off for the White House, the race to be the candidate is surprisingly up in the air for both parties. However, as ABC News contributor Sarah Isgur demonstrated on 710 WOR’s Len Berman and Michael Riedel in the Morning program, polls suggest that the majority of American voters overwhelmingly don’t relish a Joe Biden-Donald Trump rematch in 2024.
Isgur described the results of a recent poll of voters to Berman and Riedel that highlights the problem for the incumbent Biden. “There was a focus group recently where they asked Democratic primary voters who voted for Joe Biden in 2020, ‘Do you think he’s a good leader?’ Nobody raised their hands. ‘Do you think he can serve out his term in 2024?’ Nobody raised their hands. ‘Do you think he can handle the economy well?’ Nobody raised their hands. That’s really bad for Joe Biden.”
The problem is magnified, however, when the leading candidate on the wide-open right is discussed. “One of those word clouds came out today among independent voters, ‘What’s the first word that comes to mind when you think of Donald Trump?’. Uhm, ‘criminal’- uh, are we allowed to curse on this show?- ‘a-hole’… So, you’re gonna have the a-hole versus the old guy, and nobody wants either of them!”
There is hope for the rest of the GOP field, but only, it seems, if primary voters can break away from Trump. “I think the opening they see to bring down Donald Trump is that electability issue… At the end of the day, he can’t win, so if you like those policies, you’re gonna need someone in the White House to actually implement them, and that’s why you need to look at other candidates. The problem is… Republican primary votes still think Donald Trump is most likely to beat Joe Biden.”
