The first two days of the new year have certainly been interesting, to put it mildly. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators tried to shut down JFK Airport, Mayor Eric Adams issued an edict to prevent migrants from taking a bus into Manhattan- only to watch the migrants get off the bus in New Jersey and take a train the rest of the way- and the 2024 Joe Biden-Donald Trump Election Day rematch is now ten months away. Speaking on 710 WOR’s Len Berman and Michael Riedel in the Morning program, New York City Councilman Joe Borelli (R-NY 51ST) offered his take on these and several other hot-button issues in the new year.
“They’re not winning any hearts and minds of New Yorkers by doing any of this stuff,” Borelli told Berman and Riedel about the demonstrators. “And now, we’re seeing a whole new level of destruction, in the sense that they’re basically trying to inconvenience every New Yorker’s [life] until they cave or capitulate to whatever cause they’re going after, and it’s disgusting. And what we saw [New Year’s Day], with the release of this balloon, basically toward the JFK tarmac, really could amount to terrorism, in the sense that planes don’t do well when their engines get hit by a balloon.”
Borelli is less than optimistic about the outcome of the 2024 presidential election, if Trump is the winner, because he expects outrage from the left. “I am certainly concerned if Trump does win the election, what will happen in New York City, because the kind of riots we saw in 2016 and the inauguration in 2017- I recall one of my friends was hit by a D battery in Washington DC during the inauguration day. I think that’s just child’s play to what will happen in January of 2025 if Trump is inaugurated again.”
But he saved his harshest comments for Mayor Adams and his mishandling of the migrant crisis. “Once people are in the country, there really is no effective way to prevent them from getting to New York City. We got in this mess because he and a lot of other people were too happy to take this migrant crisis on and be sort of the virtue-signaling hero of the left. This is part and parcel to why more people are going to be willing to even hold their nose in some cases and say, you know what, things were better between 2016 and 2020 then they are between 2020 and now.”
