Who Should Be the GOP Hopeful to Call It a Campaign After New Hampshire?

With Iowa in the rear-view mirror, media speculation now focuses on New Hampshire in the race for the White House. Donald Trump dominated the final tally in an unprecedented blowout, forcing Vivek Ramaswamy to bow out, leaving Florida governor Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley to wonder if their campaign will be the next casualty. Connell McShane is the host of “News Nation Now with Connell McShane;” he appeared on 710 WOR’s Len Berman and Michael Riedel in the Morning program to offer his opinion on who becomes the next domino to fall before the Trump juggernaut.

“It should be DeSantis; I mean, he doesn’t have a path,” McShane speculated for Berman and Riedel. “But, he said, I think on a donor call yesterday, according to sources, that he wants to stay in through Super Tuesday, so theoretically it’ll be DeSantis after, you know, he doesn’t put up much of a number in New Hampshire, but we’ll see. I think it goes Haley and Trump into South Carolina, and if Haley wins New Hampshire, then at least she’s got a fighting chance.”

As for Haley, many pundits are looking ahead to South Carolina and are dismissive about her chances to win even her home state. McShane, however, assumes the possibility that a New Hampshire win might make Trump less inevitable in the Palmetto State. “Again, I think it’s unlikely, but the argument is, because of her win in New Hampshire, there will be a different view of the race; in other words, people in South Carolina will look, remember her time as governor- Republicans, at least- and say, you know what, she was a pretty good governor… and those polls will change.”
