Common Core Testing Begins
Posted April 1st, 2014 @ 6:30am

Three days of Common Core testing begins in New York today, but many parents are allowing their students to skip the exam.

Among them is Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, who is running for governor of New York.  He said his children won't be "guinea pigs" for the program.

"They will opt out, as is their legal right," Astorino told the New York Post.

This is the second year of Common Core testing, which is said to be more rigorous than in the past.  That's caused complaints from parents and even a handful of protests in recent weeks.

Students in 3rd through 8th grades are being tested over three days.  A second portion of the test will be given later this month.

Merryl Tisch, the Board of Regents Chancellor, defended the tougher exams.

"You come out against standards and you contribute to the decline of America.  Shame on us," she said.
