Rangel Hoping for 23rd Term in Congress
Posted June 24th, 2014 @ 10:17am by Terry Trahim

Congressman Charlie Rangel is in one of the toughest primary fights of his life, as he tries for another term in the House of Representatives.

He's squaring off in a Democratic primary today against a handful of candidates, including State Senator Adriano Espaillat.  Two years ago, Rangel defeated Espaillat by about 1,000 votes.

The 84 year old Rangel was first elected to Congress in 1970 and has the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and former President Bill Clinton.  President Barack Obama and Mayor Bill de Blasio chose not to endorse either candidate.

Espaillat has served in the New York State Senate since 2010.  Before that, he was a member of the New York State Assembly.  If elected, he would be the first Dominican-American in Congress.

The 13th Congressional district includes Upper Manhattan and part of the Bronx.

Polls are open until 9 p.m.
